What to Look For
- The air coming out feels warm or only mildly cool, even on the lowest temperature setting.
- Ice or frost forms on the outdoor unit’s copper pipes.
- The compressor runs constantly but the room never quite reaches the set temperature.
- Your electricity bill climbs without any change in usage habits.
- You hear a faint hissing sound near the indoor or outdoor unit.
Why Refrigerant Runs Low in the First Place
Refrigerant is a sealed, closed-loop gas — a healthy AC should never need a top-up at all. If levels are low, it almost always means there’s a leak somewhere in the copper lines, coil, or joints. This is why a technician who just tops up the gas without finding and sealing the leak is only offering a temporary fix; the level will drop again within months.
Topping Up vs a Full Recharge
A small top-up can be appropriate if a leak has just been repaired and only a modest amount of gas escaped. If levels have dropped significantly, or the system has been low for a while, a full recharge to the manufacturer’s specified pressure is the more reliable fix — a partial refill under-pressurises the system and leaves the compressor working outside its intended range.
Why It Matters
Running an AC low on refrigerant forces the compressor to work harder than it’s built for, which shortens its lifespan and can turn a simple gas top-up into a much costlier compressor replacement. A yearly AC AMC plan catches low refrigerant before it becomes a no-cooling emergency.
