Window AC
Lower upfront and installation cost, straightforward to service, and a solid choice for smaller rooms. Because everything sits in one box, repairs tend to be simpler and faster — there’s no outdoor unit or long copper piping run to inspect separately. The trade-off is that it needs a suitable window or wall opening of the right size, and it’s noticeably louder indoors than a split unit.
Split AC
Quieter indoor operation, more flexible placement since it doesn’t depend on a window, and generally better energy efficiency at a higher upfront cost. The outdoor unit also means installation takes longer and needs a spot outside with reasonable access — something to check before you buy, especially in denser housing.
Room Size and Layout
As a rough guide, smaller rooms up to roughly 120 sq ft are well served by either a 1-ton window or split unit, while larger or sun-facing rooms usually need 1.5 ton or above regardless of type. Ceiling height, direct sunlight, and how many people typically use the room all push the required capacity up.
Running Costs Over Time
A higher BEE star rating reduces running cost on both window and split units, but split ACs generally lead in efficiency at the same star rating because of better compressor technology. Over several years of daily summer use, that difference in electricity use can offset a meaningful part of the higher upfront price.
Installation Quality Decides More Than the Brand
Whichever you choose, professional AC installation is what determines how well it performs — incorrect refrigerant charging, poor piping insulation, or a badly angled indoor unit will undercut even a good unit’s efficiency and lifespan.
